Magic Mountains

The ‘Magic Mountains’ series explores mountains as metaphors for peace and survival in the midst of humanity’s deeply warped relationship with its natural environment. Two installation pieces and one vitrine bring together ceramic and metal shapes planted into sand to evoke dry and desolate landscapes in which a single mountain peak still thrives. The sharp and rusty metal shards or ceramic peaks evoke a sense of menace while a central mountain remains untouched and serene or touched with gold in the midst of the wasteland. This ‘Magic Mountains’ series is intended to serve as a visual vocabulary to highlight environmental and existential concerns and the urgency of protecting our natural world.

Magic Mountains I: Glazed stoneware, rusted Corten steel, sand, plywood

Magic Mountains II: Glazed stoneware, sand, gold leaf, rusted Corten steel, sand.

Magic Mountains III: Glass, brass, rusted Corten steel, stone, sand, paper, acetate.

This vitrine presents the Magic Mountains as a microcosm. It is a very personal interpretation of the mountain-scape, which weaves in many memories.  The stone is part of a collection of mineral pieces I brought back from a pilgrimage to Mount Kailash in Tibet.  The map behind highlights some places near and dear to me in the French Alps.
